The ward of St Martin (sometimes called Wareham St Martin) is comprised largely of the community of Sandford which lies to the north of Wareham. The ward also includes much of the Wareham Forest and stretches up to Lytchett Minster at the Baker's Arms roundabout.

The Conservative spokesman for St Martin is Jane Thomas, who is standing for election to Purbeck District Council on May 1, 2008.

Jane is married to Tony and they have three children: Christopher who is 18, Matthew who is 15, and Sarah 12; Jane and her family have lived in this area for the past 11 years.

All three of her children have attended local schools - Matthew is currently at Lytchett Minster and Sarah at Sandford Middle. Jane describes herself as a working Mum who works as a Customer Sales Representative for an insurance company in Westbourne. She has served the community in the past as a school governor of a Purbeck Church of England First School for 9 years - with two years as chairman - and during that time Jane secured the necessary funding to set up an out of hours school club for working parents, which was modelled on the excellent example at Sandford St Martin First School.

Jane has been involved in local politics for the past 17 years and feels privileged to have the opportunity to represent this area on the local district council.

For this area, Jane will:

  • Oppose the Western Expansion plan and over-development, including the proposed wind farm at Trigon which will be seen from the ‘look out’ at Studland, on the Jurassic coast and in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

  • Strive to ensure better facilities and opportunities for our children to enable them to lead healthy and fulfilled lives. I am concerned about the lack of sports teams at Lytchett Minster School and I am disappointed that the school governors have done nothing to address this issue.

  • I would like to see greater support for young people to enable them to cope with the temptations of cigarettes, alcohol and drugs.

  • Fight for a better share of Purbeck’s resources for this area.

  • Campaign for the retention of our local post office with all the vital community facilities that are central to our area for young and old alike.

For Purbeck, Jane will:

  • Seek continued improvements to our recycling efforts.

  • Hold Council officials to account on how they spend your money.

  • Oppose excessive Council Tax increases.

  • Support local Community Action plans.

  • Press for improved road infrastructure to overcome the congestion problems we all face daily, the A351 simply can’t take any more traffic.
